Could Marijuana Become the Next Diabetes Drug?

Most people have heard about the medical qualities of marijuana plants. The positive effects are not only well documented; some of them are actually medically proven. One of those qualities is the marijuana’s (or more like its main compound’s) ability to suppress pain. There is a reason, however, why the plant is still heavily researched. Scientists think they can gain even more medical advantages. Some of them even think that marijuana could be a valuable tool in battling diabetes. The positive qualities of medical marijuana diabetes would be a huge discovery that could rearrange the medicinal field for a long time.

Current users could provide valuable data

There are studies that compared users with non-users by various aspects of their health. Among some of the most interesting findings, there were some fascinating discrepancy between the users’ and non-users’ carbohydrate metabolism. Fascinatingly, the “user” group had a much better carb metabolism compared to the non-user group. This is extremely important because diabetes mainly comes down to this factor, how well our body can deal with carbohydrates. Foods that raise our blood sugar levels quickly are a great concern for those who suffer from this often sneaky disease.  Medical marijuana diabetes could be a huge breakthrough.

A huge research like that could be an absolute game changer

The study involved almost 5,000 men (4,600 to be precise) and women overall, which is a rather significant number. Out of those almost 5,000 people, 48% had smoked marijuana at least once before and as many as 12% of them were regular smokers. That 12% (even after adjustment) showed better results compared to the non-smokers. Their insulin levels were – on average – 16% lower than the others’, which is a significant number, and gives plenty of optimism for the researchers regarding the future development of a medical marijuana diabetes solution. The Controversial Wonders of Medical Marijuana

Let’s face it, medical marijuana is still one of the most controversial topics. Despite the increasing legalization (we are not talking about recreational use), many still don’t see the advantages, regardless of the increasing number of case studies. There are studies about the effects of medical marijuana for migraines, and despite still being illegal in most countries and states, cannabis oil is also as popular as ever.

The notion is growing, and the naysayers seem to be powerless at the moment

Regardless of what they’re thinking or trying to do to prevent it, more states are choosing to legalize it (for medical use). If we know that they will allow it, finding out what medical problems we can use it for, seems to be a logical step. Among the already proven effects, we already heard about the positive side effects of medical marijuana for migraines, but it has many other positive qualities.
We have known for a while that the prolonged and excessive use of cannabis isn't really good for our brains, but what about a controlled amount? If we can believe some very promising case studies, it turns out that a controlled use of the substance can actually have a positive effect on different brain disorders, including seizure related problems.

Crohn’s disease, nerve pain

The FDA has already approved medical marijuana for migraines, but they are also talking about it as a possible solution for Crohn’s disease, for the nausea during cancer treatments, or muscle spasms caused by various disorders. Even if we are skeptical regarding the medicinal uses of the substance, we still have to conclude that the amount of direct and indirect evidence is starting to become rather staggering. There is a long way until the recreational use of marijuana is accepted in every state, if it ever happens, but the medicinal qualities of the substance are definitely more prevalent than ever before in modern times.
